When you are out shopping the Memorial Day sales or camping with your families and friends this weekend, I thought it would be a good time to remind everybody of what Memorial Day really is:
Memorial Day was originally called Decoration Day and is a day of remembrance for those who have died in our nation’s service.
Three years after the end of the Civil War, Memorial Day was proclaimed on 5 May 1868 by General John Logan, national commander of the Grand Army of the Republic, in his General Order No. 11, and was first observed on 30 May 1868, (It is believed that date was chosen because flowers would be in bloom all over the country) and flowers were placed on the graves of Union and Confederate soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery. “Memorial Day is not about division. It is about reconciliation; it is about coming together to honor those who gave their all.”
Something to think about when you are celebrating this three day weekend.
