A Special Note about Windows 7
Microsoft Windows 7 is being released on Thursday, October 22. With all of the hype, it can be hard to determine what is important when it comes to upgrading to a new operating system. Here are a few tips.
- Know what package to get. In order to run Cougar Mountain Software you need to have Windows 7 Professional or Windows 7 Ultimate. Either of these versions will include all of the software components needed to run CMS in a network environment without any problems.
- Be sure it is the 32-bit version of Windows 7. Windows 7 will come in both a 32-bit and 64-bit versions. They are not interchangeable, and buying one does not get you the other. Many software programs, including CMS, will not run on a 64-bit operating system. Additionally, the 64-bit version needs a more powerful PC to run and may not be compatible with your current hardware.
- Know if you need an upgrade or a full installation. If you are currently running Windows XP, or some versions of Windows Vista, you will need to completely reinstall the operating system. Other versions of Windows Vista can be upgraded to Windows 7. Check with your software vendor if you are not sure which option you will need.
- Be prepared. If you do need to have a full installation of Windows 7, you will have to erase everything currently on your PC. Be sure that everything you want is backed up first, or hire an IT professional to complete the installation for you without losing your data.
- The best tip is to be informed. You will have a better experience with the transition if you do some research first. Do not trust the sales representative to know the answers for you. They may know about the software, but they won’t know your needs as well as you.
These are just a few basic tips to remember for any new software you may be purchasing. Stay informed. Software may seem like a small thing, but it is something you will use everyday and will have a big impact on your business. They do not have to erase everything. windows 7, just like Windows vista, will move the files into a seperate directory for access while transistioning.
Although software will not function the data will still be available.
